A weak flushing toilet may take longer than the average toilet to fully flush and empty the contents of the bowl. The culprit of a slow flush is often a clog within the plumbing. Older toilets also flush slowly when the small jets below the rim become clogged. Low water levels in the tank are another reason for sluggish emptying, according to the Natural Handyman.

Fixing a Slow Flushing Toilet With A Plunger

A plunger is a good first step to unclog blockages that slow down toilet flushing. You will need a large bucket filled with water and a plunger to complete the job. Place the plunger into the toilet covering the opening at the bottom. Quickly press and pull up on the handle to suction the plunger to the surface. Repeat this several times to allow for the suction to move any blockages.

When you have removed the plunger, let the water drain out. Pour the water from the bucket into the bowl of the toilet to force any remaining debris free from the plumbing. If the problem was a clog within the plumbing, the toilet should flush quickly after this method.

Fixing a Sluggish Toilet with a Toilet Snake

A toilet snake is a tool found in home improvement stores that is used to clean out pipes. To use it correctly, place the snake into the toilet with the handle above the toilet. By rotating the handle, the plumbing snake is moved further and further into the pipe, clearing out any clogs as it goes. When the entire snake has been inserted, it can be removed by rotating the handle in the reverse direction to withdraw the snake. After the clog has been dislodge, dump water into the toilet bowl to further force the clog out.

Cleaning Can Improve a Slow Toilet

Care and maintenance improves the life of a toilet. There are small holes beneath the rim of a toilet that allow water to jet into the bowl when the toilet is flushed. These holes can become clogged over time due to mineral deposits, dirt and even toilet bowl cleaner discs that are left continuously in the bowl. To clean these jet holes, use a small straight object like a skewer or opened safety pin to remove build up. Frequent cleaning and brushing the toilet with a toilet brush can help to keep these areas free flowing.

Improving a Slow Flush By Adjusting Water Levels

If the water level in the tank is too low, the toilet will not have a powerful flush and emptying the bowl will be sluggish. To improve the water level while still conserving water, a brick or stone can be placed into the tank. This displaces the water so the level raises. A plastic bottle filled with water or weights will have a similar effect.

Saving Money By Fixing a Slow Toilet Yourself

By repairing a slow emptying toilet yourself, you will save money and time. If you unable to fix a sluggish flush on your own, consult a professional plumber as the problem may be a deeper issue, such as a full septic tank.
